With most people having a few days off over the coming weeks, we’ve taken a look at some of the best activities Wakefield has to offer this Christmas.
Christmas comes but once a year and after what has been a quite stressful 12 months, many of us are ready to make the most of it with some days out between now and the New Year.
But with so many fantastic destinations in Wakefield to choose from, where should you go? Here are a few of our suggestions:
Santa Underground.
Santa Underground is located at the National Coal Mining Museum and is an exceptionally distinctive experience, as Santa’s enchanting grotto is situated 140 metres below the surface! Plus, the intriguing question of whether the bell will place you on the naughty or nice list adds an element of excitement, with well-behaved children being rewarded with a present and certificate, while those on the naughty list receive the gift nobody wants for Christmas… a lump of coal!
Taking place all the way through to Christmas Eve, prices for Santa Underground start at £12 for children and £10 for adults. For availability and booking information, click here.

Sleeping Beauty.
For many people, a festive trip to the pantomime is a vital part of the holiday season and this year’s offering from Theatre Royal Wakefield is none other than Sleeping Beauty!
Featuring all the fun, magic, laughs and colourful outfits you’d expect from a top-quality panto, this dose of family fun is sure to have kids and adults alike grinning and joining in with the organised chaos as soon as the curtains are raised.
Running between now and January 7th, with showings at various times, prices start from £15.
Theatre Royal Wakefield, Drury Lane, Wakefield. WF1 2TE.
Carols By Candlelight.
Offering exactly what it says on the tin, Carols By Candlelight is one of Wakefield Cathedral’s most popular and eagerly anticipated events.
Taking place on Friday 15th and Thursday 21st December, this yuletide celebration of beloved carols is made even more special by the incredible surroundings of the candlelit cathedral. Is there a better way to get into the Christmas spirit?!
Both services run from 7pm – 9:30pm, with prices starting at £14 for children and over 65s.
Wakefield Cathedral, Northgate, Wakefield. WF1 1HG.
