If you're in the market for a second-hand family car but can't decide which is right for you, read on for our list of some of the best models that are currently available.
Although it's technically a supermini, the VW Polo is incredibly spacious making it a family car in all but name.
There are plenty of different variants to choose between but all boast a whole host of useful features, such as air conditioning, remote central locking and multi-function steering wheels. Comfy, roomy in both the front and back, plenty of storage space, a large boot which, in some models, also has an adjustable floor - the list of benefits goes on and on.
Throw in its quiet engines and fantastic fuel economy - upwards of 60mpg if you're sensible - and it's hard to find fault with the Polo. In fact, the only real drawback is the price. Used Polo's tend to be reasonably priced but most of its peers are often significantly cheaper.
One of the most popular family cars on sale in the UK, the Astra might seem a bit of a bland choice but the most recent versions are actually pretty sleek and refined, yet still as practical as ever.
Offering an exceptionally smooth and spacious ride, especially over long distances, and with several economical engines to choose between, all with technologies designed to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, one of the best things about Astras is the price - because there are so many of them on the road and their price tends to depreciate rapidly, they offer excellent value for money.
Okay, they're not the most fun to drive, but if it's safety and affordability you're after in a family car, look no further.
Arguably the most well-rounded family hatchback of all time, it's not hard to see why more than 245,000 Golfs changed hands in 2021.
Comfortable and agile, Golfs are a joy to drive thanks to their incredible suspension, smart interiors and intuitive layouts. There's plenty of fun to be had too, with touchscreen systems, phone mirroring and the option of analogue or digital instrument panels on most models. Everyday family life is well catered for too, with plenty of room and a good-sized boot that can easily fit a baby buggy or the weekly shop.
It's true that the Golf sits at the more expensive end of the scale when it comes to used cars and some rival models are even more spacious but when you drive it, you'll understand where every penny of your money went.
There's a reason the Focus was the UK's most bought new car every year between 1999 and 2008. Actually, make that a lot of reasons…
A reliable, mid-sized family car with excellent handling and steering that's well-equipped with in-car tech and is available with a huge choice of engines and trim levels. Even at the most basic level, almost every Focus boasts air-con, a USB port and Bluetooth and alloy wheels, while the more advanced versions also feature heated windscreens and DAB radio.
On the down side, leg room in the back is a little limited and the interior quality isn't up to the same standard as some of the other cars on this list but for a solid all-rounder that offers fantastic value for money, the Focus takes some beating.
